Abstract

The present study assessed the economics of garlic cultivation in the Terai zone of West Bengal for three categories of farmers, viz. A1, A2 and B, based on the method and technology of cultivation. The total cost of cultivation of the B Category farmers, grown improved variety, revealed 20.96 and 38.22 per cent higher than the Category A1 and A2 farmers, cultivating LTV, respectively. The net income (?/acre), estimated at ?166398.96 for the improved variety, was significantly higher than the LTV. However, technical efficiency was found to be identical (around 2.75:1) for both varieties. Seeds, manures, and irrigation were the most significant factors affecting garlic yield in the improved variety. Not all inputs were optimally utilised, implying that yield could be enhanced through the efficient use of resources with a change in technology.
