Abstract

This study analysed the impact of extension services provided by the Agricultural Technology Management Agency on farmers' efficiency. The primary data in this study were collected from 160 farmers from the Golaghat district of Assam through a random sampling technique. Initially, the technical efficiency of the farmers was measured using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique. Secondly, the Tobit Regression analysis was employed to understand the variables affecting the measured inefficiencies. Comparisons of the overall technical efficiency scores of the two groups of farmers indicated that the beneficiary farmers of ATMA were more efficient than the farmers who had not received any extension services. The relatively large-scale efficiency score implies the inefficiencies resulted from inappropriate resource use. Education of the farmers, the size of their land holdings, and access to extension services are the variables that impact the efficiency of the farmers in the study area.
