Abstract

Agriculture is facing continuously new and important problems and challenges. The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) can be a major intervention for more efficient agriculture. Now-a-days, more and more ICT technologies used for agricultural development, such as satellites, the internet, mobile phone, and social media. Internet, the base of ICT, overcomes some of the most challenging issues related to advisory services like accessibility, literacy and language barriers, geographic coverage and local focus. The present investigation was carried out at Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar (Haryana). In the study, a Census survey of all extension personnel (23 at main campus and 85 at outstations) of the university was selected as the sample. The data were collected through personal interview technique with the help of a well-structured and pre-tested questionnaire and analyzed using appropriate statistical tools. Findings of the study indicated that the majority of the respondents were middle aged (36-50), doctorate holders and serving in the university for more than 15 years. Moreover, lack of ICT knowledge and skills ranked as the first constraint faced by extension personnel with the highest mean score of 1.63, followed by the inability of the extension personnel to use the internet, lack of suitable training, etc. As far as the consequences of ‘not using the internet’ by extension personnel are concerned, loss of relevance, confidence, and credibility’ was ranked as a major consequence.
