Abstract
The cultivation of high-value crops is highly specialized, technical and remunerative venture as compared to field crops. Being perishable in nature, systematic planning is required for their cultivation. The present investigation was carried out to study the status, economics and policy support for vegetable cultivation in Haryana. Among vegetable crops, tomato, cauliflower (Kharif
crops) and onion and potato (Rabi crops) were selected on the basis of area coverage. The relevant information was gathered from different published sources. The results revealed that return over variable expenses was `57,514 for tomato and around `50,000 each for cauliflower and onion. The variation in returns from the cultivation of vegetable crops was observed due to the higher market price, low seed cost and higher productivity. The value of B-C ratio was found more than one which indicated the cultivation of these crops was profitable. The cultivation of vegetable crops also provided opportunities for employment of family and surplus
labour in rural areas. State Government has initiated a scheme Bhavantar Bharpayee Yojana (BBY) to protect vegetable growers for the sustainability of vegetable cultivation.
