Koothapar big tank in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, India, was selected for this study. The estimated total economic value of the Koothapar big tank wetland was `1031 lakhs per annum. The primary component that contributed to the total economic value was provisional services. Further, bathing and washing accounted for 23.28 per cent of the total economic value, followed by irrigation at 16.39 per cent, aesthetics at 10.28 per cent, cattle grazing at 10.09 per cent, biodiversity conservation at 8.34 per cent and flood storage at 7.86 per cent. This study would also help policymakers develop welfare policies to enhance the optimal usage of the services and conservation and restoration of the Koothapar Big Tank wetland.
