The study was carried out in Sira taluk of Karnataka during 2014-15 with 120 sample households, consisting of 30 farmers each in small and large farmer categories, with and without irrigation. Analysis of data revealed that irrigated farmers earned on an average 300 per cent more income than rainfed farmers with the same area under cultivation irrespective of crops grown. On an average 43 per cent of total household expenditure was on food and its proportion in the total expenditure decreased with increase in income. A linear regression function revealed that impact of farm income on food expenditure was more than non-farm income, whereas, for non-food expenditure, the reverse was found true. The results revealed that the impact of irrigation on net income was higher than that of the size of landholdings. Hence more efforts should be directed towards making irrigation available and efficient utilization of irrigation water.
Farm income, food and non-food expenditure, non-farm income, off-farm income.
