Tamil Nadu is experiencing severe water crisis and the state primarily constitutes rainfed areas thus there is a prerequisite to increase the productivity in rainfed areas to rise the overall agricultural production and to improve the living conditions of the farmers. In Tamil Nadu, agrarian development has meant for irrigated agriculture, with little importance placed on dry-lands.There is an urgent need for restoring the groundwater aquifer with each drop of rainwater to avert impending severe water scarcity for agriculture and rural development. Watershed Development programmes are meant to check soil erosion, optimum rainwater utilization, encourage a pattern of land use and cropping and agronomic practices which will augment the production potential of the land in an integrated way covering all categories of land in a watershed. The concept of integrated and participatory watershed management has emerged as the cornerstone of rural development.
